Need a fresh activity
idea for a birthday party or sleep over? Beading is, historically, a fabulous
family activity and spans all age groups. Young and old alike enjoy creating
beautiful wearable art. Beaded jewelry, bookmarks, key chains are among
the many projects that make unique and personal gifts that are cherished
by the recipients.
Beading is a great pastime for grandmas, moms, sisters and daughters to
share and believe it or not, my 5-year-old boy enjoys it as well! (I am
having fun with his interest while it lasts.) Watching my son’s
enjoyment as he creates a bracelet, bag tag or zipper pull is priceless.
He loves to create his own pieces from scratch with no direction from
me. He makes gifts for me and his grandmas, which we all love. Sometimes
the item would only warrant a mother’s love but at other times,
the items are remarkable.
My girlfriend’s 7-year-old daughter was looking for a party activity
at her last birthday. We talked about it and they decided on a Beaded
Birthday Bash. They bought the beads from their Wild Cherry Beads representative
and set it up the day of the party. The girls had a ball! Each enjoyed
making her own party favor to take home and show off to family and friends.
With little adult interaction, the girls did a fantastic job and had so
much fun that many were talking about doing it at their next birthday.
Beaded Party
Favor Project
Memory wire bracelets for the girls or zipper pulls/bag
tags for the boys (or tom boys) make a perfect birthday party-length project.
Here is the basic recipe for kids’ beaded bracelets:
Bracelet Ingredients (courtesy of Wild Cherry Beads, inc.)
• Memory Wire
• Seed Beads
• Needle Nose pliers (for finishing the bracelets)
(That’s all you need, really!)
Cut the wire for
the length of bracelet you want. Curl one end and BEAD away! Curl the
other end when done and VIOLA, you have a kid’s bracelet –
a party favor each will enjoy taking home. Expect this fun activity to
take about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the number and decisiveness
of the partygoers.
The best age group for such a party falls within the 7-12 age group. However,
3-6 year olds can do it too. You just need to think about the attention
span of the age group. Some can focus for 30 minutes, but some lose interest
after 10 minutes. Teenagers also enjoy making bracelets and key chains
but they like to do it at the adult level with bigger, better beads than
the seed beads and like to finish them with toggles or lobster clasps.
FYI: zipper pulls, bag tags, bookmarks and key chains make a fun activity
as well and can accommodate those who feel bracelets are too“girly”.
