Emerald and the Love Song of the Dead Fishermen
Has it been awhile since you have experienced one of the outings that makes living in the Twin Cities so special - an evening of low-budget, small venue theatre that manages with the barest of sets and the most minimal of props to somehow transport you into a realm of delicious ideas, irresistible storytelling and laugh-out-loud humor? If it has, the current offering by nimbus theatre at the Minneapolis Theatre Garage, Emerald and the Love Song of the Dead Fishermen is just the ticket.
There isn’t a weak link in the ensemble cast as they dish up a quirky tale with a simple message of love and longing at its heart that comes strangely to life when a world of corporate coffee baristas intersects with timeless fi shing lore. Described as a “modern maritime odyssey combining mythology, music, and poetry,” you might expect it to be a bit heavy, but it is quite the opposite – fresh, buoyant and peppered with humorous bits and oddball characters that propel the story briskly along, this play is a delight and leaves you longing for more.
